A Simulation of Sound Production and Detection

The repetitive motion of the solid object at the left is the source of the sound in this simulation.

The solid object on the right side represents a sound detector that responds to the changing force of particle collisions nearby.

Note that the highlighted particle in the middle does not need to make contact with either the source or the detector in order for the sound to travel through air.
